A beszélgetésre a tavaly decemberi bécsi koncert előtt került sor.

Feltételezem, mindig is hatalmas Celtic Frost rajongók voltatok.
Vanja: Igen, hogyne.

Kialakítottuk a saját rajongói bázisunkat, a követőink táborát.

sam_5020.JPGMindannyian részt vesztek a dalszerzésben?
V. Santura: Igen. Minden dalt négyesben dolgozunk ki a próbateremben. Az alapötletek javát Tom írja, de én is írtam két-két dalt a lemezekre, szóval én is kiveszem a részemet kreatív zenekari munkából.

Úgy gondolom, a Melana Chasmata sötétebb, ugyanakkor súlyosabb lett az Eparistera Daimoneshez képest. Egyetértesz ezzel?
V. Santura: Nem is tudom. A Melana Chasmata ezzel szemben inkább befelé forduló. Lehangolóbb, én legalábbis így érzem. Nincs annyi düh a zenében, több viszont a melankólia.

V. Santura: Igen, a teljes lemezt a stúdiómban produceltük. Most viszont mindent az én stúdiómban végeztünk.

Mely bandákkal dolgoztál a stúdiódban?

Mi a mögöttes tartalma?
Tessék, máris itt a kettős jelentés!..

Vanja: Azokat a dalokat nemigen játsszuk élőben.

Ők voltak a főemberek, a dobos mindig cserélődött. Játszottuk a Synagoga Satanae-t, a Procreation Of The Wickedet, a Babylon Fellt és a Circle Of The Tyrantst – vagyis négy jelentős Celtic Frost album dalait, na meg két-három Triptykon számot.

A Melana Chasmata borítója a néhai H. R. Giger egyik utolsó munkája? A zenekarnak készítette?

„…At least for the people that are active in the music scene, are going to concerts and buying albums actively, Triptykon is already almost in the same status as Celtic Frost was before they disbanded” – interview with Vanja Šlajh (bass) and V. Santura (guitars) of Triptykon

You are in a band with one of the living legends of the underground and extreme metal. I imagine you’ve always been huge Celtic Frost fans.
Vanja: Yes, sure. I mean we play Celtic Frost and Hellhammer songs almost every night and we deeply enjoy it.
V. Santura: Yeah, of course, but Triptykon is the successor of Cetlic Frost in a way. It feels kind of natural to us to play the Celtic Frost songs.

And how does it feel on the personal level to be in a band with Tom G. Warrior? Is it easy to overcome the generational gap between you guys and him by playing together?
V. Santura: At a certain age, this generational gap doesn’t matter that much. We are all adult people, we are all above thirty in the band and it’s not like he’s our daddy and we are kids. We just want to play the same music and have a certain common vision. That’s what it’s about.

By the way, does Tom still use his old stage name Tom G. Warrior?
V. Santura: Yeah, he does. Some people think it’s something he only used in the past but it’s not true. I think it doesn’t matter that much if it’s Tom Gabriel Fischer or Tom Gabriel Warrior. Both count. And when we do signing sessions, I think he signs as Tom Warrior and he definitely identifies himself with this name still.

Don’t you sometimes feel that you don’t get enough attention from the people compared to Tom?
V. Santura: We don’t fear that people might consider it as a continuation because, like I said before, it’s even an intention in a way. But of course I think Triptykon has really got its own identity now and that’s what we see every day when we are on stage. We have developed our own fan base, our own following. And sometimes people are freaking out when we play Triptykon material. Every time we start to play The Prolonging for example they are applauding and into it, during the intro already. Yesterday we started the set with Goetia like every day on this tour and the people were really into it. Of course they appreciate it when we play some Celtic Frost classics like Circle Of The Tyrants but I now really have the feeling that people appreciate Triptykon equally.

So it’s more than just Celtic Frost the way it’s supposed to sound in these modern days.
V. Santura: I think so. Triptykon has some other elements that Celtic Frost maybe didn’t have. I mean, if you listen to Eparistera Daimones and Monotheist, the last album of Celtic Frost, it’s very clear that they’re quite close stylistically but I think each of us brings his / her own personality in the playing. Norman (Lonhard) has a completely different approach of drumming, Vanja has her very own bass sound and style. And Triptykon uses way more spherical lead guitars and harmony guitars than Celtic Frost did. That’s my input, I would say.

Are you all involved in songwriting?
V. Santura: Yes we are. We arrange all songs together in the rehearsing room as a four-piece. Most of the basic ideas for the songs are written by Tom but I also wrote two songs for each of our albums so I can also contribute to the creative part of the band.

I think Melana Chasmata came out darker and heavier than Eparistera Daimones. Do you agree?
V. Santura: I don’t know. I think Eparistera Daimones was very evil and very aggressive. Melana Chasmata, however, is a little more introspective. It’s more melancholic, that’s how I feel about it. There’s not so much anger in the music, there’s more melancholy in it. But there are songs like Tree Of Suffocating Souls or Breathing, of course, which are really aggressive but the basic tone of the music is more atmospheric and more depressive in a way.

sam_5024.JPGYou were the co-producer of the album along with Tom and you’ve made the mastering, too.
V. Santura: Yeah, we produced the entire album in my studio. That was also the case with Eparistera Daimones, I did the mix but not the final mastering, we did that in an external mastering studio. This time, however, we did everything in my studio.

So you definitely don’t need the help of any external producer.
V. Santura: That’s how we felt. I mean I’m always open for new things and I could also imagine finally working with somebody else because I’ve always been engineering, recording and producing the music I’m involved with for ten years. And honestly, I would find it really interesting to finally work with an external engineer someday to see his approach and where things are going. There’s a lot of weight on my shoulders being a musician and the engineer at the same time. There’s really a lot of weight to carry, especially with this album, so I could imagine that maybe I would enjoy it more just being able to focus on the music next time. We’ll see.

With which bands did you work in your studio?
V. Santura: With a lot of bands. Most of them are rather underground or local bands, of course, but for example my other band Dark Fortress has been to my studio. And I worked for Obscura or Pestilence. I’m going to mix the new Secrets Of The Moon in January and I’m currently mixing a band called Alkaloid which is a new band of some current and past members of Obscura, Danny Tunker from Aborted and Morean of Dark Fortress. It’s going to be really extreme prog metal with a lot of death metal in it. I’m quite excited about that band at the moment because it’s a lot of hard work but I think it’s going to be a very special album. It will be very interesting for fans of extreme prog music.

“Melana Chasmata” is an expression in Greek which means “black chasms”. What’s the idea behind the album title? Was it Tom who came up with it?
V. Santura: Yes it was Tom’s idea. Actually, we always pronounce it wrong. I have a Greek friend who told me how to pronounce it correctly. It has more than one meaning, of course, so you can interpret it in various ways. If you translate it directly it, in fact, means something like “dark valleys” – or “dark depressions”. So there is already a double meaning, you know. If you only look at it from the geological aspect, it means “dark valleys” but from the metaphorical side, it’s “dark depressions” as a state of mind. It’s up to you how you interpret it, of course, it’s just that I see those two aspects. But we’re not a band that sings about geographical phenomena, it’s more about emotions.

How is it that the song called Into Despair only made it to the Japanese version of the album as a bonus track?
V. Santura: Well, I hope we are going to release it on an EP as well and not just as a Japanese bonus track because I wrote that song. I think it’s a strong song and Tom says so, too. It was a musical decision not to have it on the album but not because of the quality, it’s just that Melana Chasmata is a very long album as it is. We just felt that having this song as well would make it too long. The thing is that we always need a Japanese bonus track and there are two more songs written and completely recorded during the sessions for the new album, and we wanted to make an EP anyways. So basically we chose one of those three EP songs as Japanese bonus track because we thought this was the strongest one of the three. We still have in mind to release all three songs later on an EP and also to do a radically different version to In The Sleep Of Death, although it’s not 100% decided yet. It’s still in the making so we’ll see and when it’s about time to release it we’ll let the world know but before that I’d rather don’t make any promises.

sam_5022.JPGVocalist Simone Vollenweider made a guest appearance on Celtic Frost’s Monotheist album and now she sang on Melana Chasmata as well. How did Tom discover her back then?
Vanja: Yeah exactly, she already sang for Celtic Frost and Tom knows her for a long time.
V. Santura: I don’t know where Tom knows her from but he probably does for a long time. She also did some vocals on Eparistera Daimones and I found it extremely brilliant what she did on that album. So it was a pretty clear choice to have her again. But this time Vanja did some vocals on one song, too. It’s Waiting, the closing track.
Vanja: Yeah, for the very first time.
V. Santura: It’s very cool that she did it. There are some program voices, of course, but Vanja sings also.

How do you perform the songs with Simone’s and Vanja’s vocals live? Does Vanja do all the vocal parts or do you use samplers?
Vanja: We don’t really play those songs live. Maybe at some point we will do some concerts with a female singer but I’m not trained well enough for singing so I won’t really sing on stage.

How would you comment the fact the Tom recently refused an offer from the Wacken Open Air fest to perform under the name Celtic Frost?
V. Santura: I don’t know the exact story behind it, I just heard that there was an idea or maybe a concrete offer. Basically, Wacken wanted a one-off Celtic Frost reunion show with Tom and Martin on stage (they didn’t really care who else) and they offered a lot of money but he wasn’t interested. They were the main guys, the drummer always changed. They’ve had Reed St. Mark, then Stephen Priestly and then Reed St. Mark again… And when the reunion was done, they did it with Franco Sesa, so there were three different drummers. Anyways, it would be legitimate to use Norman as the drummer for such a show but still I think it feels really weird. We did Wacken with Triptykon in 2011. We played Synagoga Satanae, Procreation Of The Wicked, Babylon Fell and Circle Of The Tyrants – Celtic Frost songs from four relevant albums, plus two or three Triptykon songs. It would be a very similar set with a very similar line-up, except Martin would be on stage instead of Vanja. I mean, I was a member of the last Celtic Frost line-up as live guitarist. So, why would they want to pay so much money for that? That’s ridiculous. One the one hand, it’s a big compliment for Tom’s work with Celtic Frost but on the other hand, it’s an insult to Triptykon in a way, not appreciating what we are creating. And, in my opinion, it does not even display reality because Monotheist was considered a very successful comeback album, which it was, but now that I look at our chart positions, Melana Chasmata was charted higher in Germany, Switzerland or Austria than Monotheist. So, I think at least for the people that are active in the music scene, are going to concerts and buying albums actively, Triptykon is already almost in the same status as Celtic Frost was before they disbanded. And I don’t understand why Wacken would pay ten times more fee for a Celtic Frost gig. It doesn’t make sense to me.

So, a Hellhammer reunion show would be even less likely, although promoters would surely be interested...
Vanja: Not in the original line-up, you can forget about that. But I think Tom is still interested in doing something like that besides Triptykon.
V. Santura: I think he likes to play the Hellhammer songs but doesn’t want to overdo it with Triptykon because Triptykon has its own identity. Maybe he will do that one day on stage.

Is the cover of Melana Chasmata one of the late H. R. Giger’s last works? Did he make it for the band?
V. Santura: It’s an old work. He did not create it for the album but he offered us that we could basically choose from any art of his back catalogue for the album which is still amazing.
Vanja: After the first album, he was like “Wow, that was nice.” He really enjoyed it and wanted to do the second one, too. And in the end, he was happy to see the result.
