„Így bármilyen szorongásunkat ki tudjuk engedni magunkból” – interjú Taylor Younggal, a Twitching Tongues gitáros-énekesével

A Twitching Tongues-nak már a bemutatkozó lemeze is nagyszerűen sikerült, az akkori kiadói viszontagságok után viszont a tavalyi In Love There Is No Law-val még jó pár lapáttal rádobtak a kaliforniai srácok és az eddigi áldozatos munka gyümölcse mostanra kezdett beérni: odaát az Államokban olyan nevekkel játszanak együtt, mint a Madball, a menetrend szerinti európai turnék mellett mára megjárták Japánt és rövidesen Ausztráliába is elkalandoznak... Taylor Young a pár héttel ezelőtti budapesti koncert előtti órákban tartott rövid helyzetértékelést...

Legutóbbi albumotok, az In Love There Is No Law a tavalyi év egyik legnagyobb dobása volt – gondolom, nem csak számomra. Máshonnan is ennyire jó visszajelzéseket kaptatok a lemezre úgy általában?

Az In Love There Is No Law után megjelent egy split anyagotok a Wisdom In Chains-szel.

0twitchingtonques2014_13.jpgAz Only Living Witness az egyik fő hatásotok. Mely más underground kultuszbandák tartoznak a kedvenceitek közé?
Sokat merítünk a 90-es évek death metaljából is.

Taylor: Igen, persze. A hardcore számomra valóságosabb. Viszont ütősek a dallamaik.

A Preacher Man nóta személyes élményekről, netán gyermekkori traumáról szól?
Taylor: Igen. Az In Love There Is No Law is félig a tapasztalatainkon alapul, meg arról, hogyan látjuk a dolgokat társadalmi kérdésekben.

Van egy The Pit elnevezésű stúdiód? Ott készülnek a felvételeitek?
Taylor: Igen.

Más zenekarok is dolgoznak nálad?
Taylor: Igen, egy csomó dél-kaliforniai banda felvételein dolgoztam és a keleti partról is jött pár csapat. Azon kívül keverek is zenekaroknak a világ minden tájáról, most legutóbb egy párizsi csapat anyagán melóztam. A legfontosabbak közül a Soul Search, a Downpresser és a Xibalba zenekarokat említeném, minden felvételük nálam készül. Ott a Skinfather nevű csapat, amelynek hamarosan EP-je jön.

A Twitching Tongues mellett mindannyian tagjai vagytok más aktív zenekaroknak is.
Taylor: Igen. Ezek a fő csapatok.

Hogyan zajlik nálatok a dalszerzés?

0twitchingtonques2014_01.jpg

Vesz mostanában énekleckéket Colin? Mind a hangja, mind pedig a dallamai jelentősen megerősödtek.
Taylor: Nem. Lassanként kiismeri a saját hangját.

Taylor: Bizony.

“An outlet for any possible angst that we may have” – interview with Taylor Young (guitar, vocals) of Twitching Tongues

0twitchingtonques2014_03.jpg
Your latest album, In Love There Is No Law is one of last year's best releases for me. And it's not just me, I suppose. Did you also have such a good response to the record from elsewhere generally?
Taylor: Yes, absolutely. I think the people that already liked us were satisfied, maybe except for a couple of girls who wanted more soft songs. And we've definitely gotten a lot of converted people from the record.

Does that mean you're satisfied with what you've accomplished with the record?
Taylor: Yeah, I think we did with this one what we've set out to do with the first one. And it's satisfying, we're pretty happy.

After In Love There Is No Law, a split came out with Wisdom In Chains.
Taylor: That's actually a song from the session of the album that's been re-recorded from our demo. The one song from the demo that we still play. So we did an updated version with fixed melodies 'cause Colin wasn't really the greatest singer when we did the demo, and with a better sound overall.

Only Living Witness is one of your main influences. Which other underground cult bands are your faves?
Taylor: There's another band from Boston called Sam Black Church. They're probably more well known that Only Living Witness 'cause they were on Taang! Records which was a giant hardcore label at one time. Just the fact that they put melodies in their songs that are extremely heavy at the same time. But we don't repeat it and don't really sing like him (Jesse “Jet” Crandall) 'cause his voice is unmatchable. And then we take a lot of influence from the 90s' death metal as well. And early classic doom metal and stuff like that, too.

So your roots can be found both in metal and hardcore.
Taylor: Sure, yeah. I grew up on metal and found hardcore later. I think the thing that attracts me is the aggression of both. Once you dive very deep into metal, you get to a certain point where it's all very corny. Lots of fake personas and people not being real, just telling stories. Hardcore to me is more of a real thing. Songs about life, songs about struggles, songs about anger and frustration, whereas metal can be about dragons and castles, things that don't matter sometimes. But I like songs that are about dragons and castles, too. Candlemass is one of our biggest influences but who knows what the fuck they sing about. But their melodies are strong. And there are metal bands where the aggression is real, too. We love Sepultura, one of the most insane sounding bands.

Is the song Preacher Man about a personal experience, maybe a childhood trauma?
Taylor: Yes. I won't go into detail 'cause the story is there but it's definitely from a personal experience with our family in general. So it's not as metaphorical as it could seem, its just pretty realistic. Writing is definitely a good outlet for stuff like that but then we also do more metaphorical songs. Just writing for the sake of writing sometimes. But it's also an outlet for any possible angst that we may have. In Love There Is No Law is also half based on experiences and also on how we see things in society.

0codeorangekids2014_06.jpg

You have a studio named The Pit. Is this where you record your stuff?
Taylor: Yes. It's in Van Nuys, California. Actually, it's just a garage turned into a studio and we live in the house that is attached.
Are there any other bands that work there?
Taylor: Yeah, I've recorded a lot of hardcore bands from South California as well as a few bands from the East Coast. And I do mixing for bands from all over the world, I just mixed a band from Paris. Most notably, I've done Soul Search, Downpresser, Xibalba, I do all their recording. There's a band called Skinfather that will be releasing an EP soon. There's a punk band called ACxDC, I just did their full length record... There's a page with the whole discography.

And you are all actively involved in other bands besides Twitching Tongues, too.
Taylor: Yeah, I play drums in Nails and I also front a band called Disgrace that's actually going to be doing a full length record at the end of the year. Everyone except for Colin is in Disgrace as well. Mike and Kyle are both in a band called Forced Order, they're putting out a 7” in just a couple of months. Colin plays guitar in a band called God's Hate which is also members of Foundation and Downpresser. Those are the main ones. Kyle, Mike and Leo used to be in a band called Creatures, they were a bigger band at one time, too. That's pretty much it actively right now.

What's the songwriting process like within the band? Do most of the ideas come from you and your brother Colin or are the other guys involved as well?
Taylor: We put the songs together 80% and then the other guys put the finishing touches on them. Colin usually handles all the lyrics, I don't really do that but then I switch them around and make sure that they're as good as they can be, playing the role of a producer. Kyle and Leo work together on writing all the solos and the lead guitar parts 'cause it's not really what I'm great at. And Mike puts his flavors on the drum parts as well 'cause Colin doesn't really put too much effort in making those as good as they can be.

Has Colin been taking any vocal lessons lately? Both his voice and his vocal melodies got remarkably stronger.
Taylor: No. Actually, just from touring, he's fallen into his voice and learned where he should stop and start. He's learning about his own voice slowly. He took voice lessons at a very young age. We know a bit about theory in general 'cause we have musical parents. We've aged as a band and he's aged as a singer. I mean he was 18 when we did Sleep Therapy and he's 22 now. We did Sleep Therapy almost a year and a half before it actually came out. When it came out, we put out the Preacher Man 7” three months later because we had half of the songs written for the next album already.

0codeorangekids2014_19.jpg

Was it so hard to find the right label?
Taylor: It was. And it was also hard to finish the record. We've had the music written about a year and a half and then over the course of that year we've finished the songs. Once we've finished Insane & Inhumane and Voluntary Confinement is when we've put out a 7” but those are from the same session as Sleep Therapy. Then we've tightened up the mixing and wrote the rest of the songs. It's got completely finished about eight months before it came out and once we've found a label, there were delays with the label and it just came out way too late. We did a tour in November of 2011 that was supposed to be the record release tour and it didn't come out until April 2012 which was just way too late. It kind of hurt us as a band so we've found a new label and put out the 7” three months later so that we continue to have momentum and new music.

Would you say you are on the right track now?
Taylor: Yes, absolutely. We're happy with where we are and going to continue to push forward.

Aren't you looking for, let's say, a bigger label at the moment?
Taylor: I can't say that we are or we aren't but our next release will be on Closed Casket for sure.

And have you got any new songs for this next release yet?
Taylor: We've got a couple but nothing that's ready to be shown and then we actually have a fun new record coming out in the Summer that we will talk about when it gets closer for sure. It's basically a full length record but I can't really give too many details about it at the moment.
