Hazai pályán az idei Dynamo Metal Festen mutatkozott be igazán népes közönség előtt a Vuur (ejtsd: „für”; a szó holland nyelven tüzet, illetve szenvedélyt jelent), vagyis az ezerarcú és számos stílusban otthonosan mozgó Anneke van Giersbergen új, metalos hangzású zenekara. Ebből az apropóból ültünk le rövid időre a bájos énekesnővel a fellépés után, hogy „KI-VUUR-KÉSSZÜK” többek között a társulat aktuális dolgait, valamint felidézzük néhány gondolat erejéig hősnőnknek a hajdani Dynamo Open Airhez fűződő emlékeit.
Ha jól rémlik, eredetileg a Dynamo-s fellépés lett volna a Vuur bemutatkozása a nagyközönség előtt. Ehhez képest volt egy klubkoncertetek a hollandiai Leeuwardenben, majd játszottatok a finnországi Tuska Open Airen és a cseh Masters Of Rock fesztiválon is. Hogy is van ez?
Anneke: Valóban így volt. Leeuwardenben egy klub-bulit nyomtunk, ahol rengeteg új dalra sort kerítettünk, majdnem az összesre. Ott teszteltük le ezeket. Utána jött ez a pár fesztivál-fellépés, a mai volt az utolsó ebben a rövid körben. Ezzel áthidaljuk a nyarat és majd a lemez megjelenése után kezdünk komolyan turnézni.
A The Gatheringgel kétszer is felléptél a Dynamo Open Airen annak idején, igaz?
Anneke: Igen, ’96-ban és ’97-ben, ha jól emlékszem. Igazán különleges volt.
És most is játszottatok Gatheringet, mintegy folytatva a hagyományokat.
Anneke: Mindig játszunk Gathering dalokat, ahogy The Gentle Storm, Ayreon vagy Devin Townsend számokat is. Szeretjük ezeket és a közönség is örömmel fogadja. Az új nótákat szoktuk a régiekkel vegyíteni.
Mit mondanál a Vuur irányvonaláról általánosságban? Az elsőként közzétett Days Go By – London dalról a The Gatheringnek egy metalosabb változata ugrott be…
Anneke: Nem is tudom. Egyszerűen csak új zenét írtunk és az eredmény metalos lett, viszont nincsenek meg benne azok a folkos elemek, amelyek az Arjen Lucassennel közös dolgainkra jellemzők. Szóval metalosabb az egész, nem prog metal. A The Gatheringgel persze szintén megvan benne az összekötő kapocs, hiszen az is metal, a hangom révén pedig eleve adott a jellegzetes megszólalás.
Mi adta a Vuur ötletét?
Anneke: A The Gentle Stormmal turnéztunk és remekül sült el az egész. Nagyon megszerettem ezeket a srácokat. Új emberekre volt szükségünk a turnéhoz és igen gyorsan raktuk össze a csapatot, de nagyszerűnek bizonyult a társaság. Eszembe is jutott, hogy ha egyszer metal albumot akarok majd készíteni, akkor velük kell dolgoznom. Felkértem őket és mindannyian csatlakoztak, úgyhogy eddig minden csodálatosan alakul.
Igaz, hogy Marcela Boviót is meghívtad a csapatba a The Gentle Storm soraiból?
Anneke: Igaz, de ő végül azt mondta, talán jobb lenne, ha saját bandát alakítana, ahol ő volna a fő énekes, és még a produkciós szakaszban kilépett. De ma is eljött.
Nem is vendégszerepel az albumon?
Anneke: Nem. Tényleg úgy volt vele, hogy inkább belefog valami saját dologba.
Nem semmi, hogy a death metal stílusból indult Ed Warby dobost (Gorefest, Hail Of Bullets stb.) is megnyerted az ügynek!
Anneke: Ő az egyik legjobb dobos, akivel valaha dolgoztunk és világszerte élő legendának számít. Fantasztikus, hogy itt van velünk a bandában. Vannak a zenében lágyabb vagy eklektikusabb részek, de neki ezek is bejönnek és nagyon is nyitott a kísérletezésre.
Miért a London alcímet kapta a Days Go By nóta? Honnan az asszociáció Londonra?
Anneke: A lemez minden egyes dalának a címében szerepel egy-egy város neve. Ilyen a szövegi koncepció, minden dal egy-egy városról szól. A London szövege az 1666. évi nagy tűzvészről szól.
Ezek szerint minden egyes szöveg valamely, az adott város történetében bekövetkezett történésről, eseményről szól?
Anneke: Igen. Eseményekről vagy érzésekről. Állandóan turnén vagyok, és gyakran járok ezekben a városokban. Minden város más és más érzést ad, más és más energiával tölt fel, mindről más és más jut eszembe. Ezekről a dolgokról írok. Néha konkrét eseményekről, néha pedig egyszerűen az adott városhoz, illetve annak hangulatához és energiájához fűződő érzéseimről.
Ha volna most egy dalod Budapestről is, miről szólna a szövege?
Anneke: Az olyan városok története, mint Budapest, végtelenül hosszú-hosszú időre nyúlik vissza. Régi város, gazdag történelmi múlttal. Jó néhány csapás érte, de megőrizte a szépségét, úgyhogy biztosan arról írnék, mennyire gyönyörű a hely és mennyire vendégszeretőek az emberek. Ugyanakkor sok sötét dolog történt a múltjában. Egy ilyen városról annyi mindent lehet írni!
Az In This Moment We Are Free – Cities album októberben jelenik meg, utána pedig az Epicával indultok turnéra.
Anneke: Így igaz, már nagyon várom. Lesz vagy húsz fellépésünk Európa-szerte. Az Epicával még sosem turnéztunk azelőtt, de nagyon régről ismerjük egymást.
Annak idején az 1990-es években valami egészen újat hoztál a színtérre. Éppenséggel Simone Simons, az Epica énekesnője is tanulhatott tőled…
Anneke: Igen, sokan kezdtek zenélni annak hatására, hogy megszerették a The Gathering zenéjét, amire rendkívül büszke vagyok.
És kik voltak a te kezdeti hatásaid?
Anneke: Hallgatok metalt, de rengeteg mást is. Mondjuk fekete előadókat, mint Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye és a rockzenében is megvannak a kedvenceim, mint például Freddie Mercury. Ők mind igen nagy hatást gyakoroltak rám.
Jó ideje rendszeresen, az aktuális albumodhoz kapcsolódóan változtatod a külsődet. Ezúttal a kinézetedet tekintve is metalosra vetted a figurát.
Anneke: Így van, szeretek változtatni dolgokon. A lányoknál már csak így megy ez, minden évben mindenen szeretünk változtatni. Én magam szoktam keresgélni és vásárolni olyan cuccokat, amelyek jól passzolnak a zenéhez.
Várhatunk tőled újabb, más irányú zenei próbálkozásokat is a Vuur mellett?
Anneke: Nem. Vannak akusztikus előadásaim mellette, de a fő csapásirány számomra a Vuur. A zenekar, a lemez és a turnézás.
Nemrégiben énekeltél a dalai láma és a holland uralkodó színe előtt, ami egy művész számára alighanem az elképzelhető legmagasabb szintű elismerést jelenti. Ennek mi a története?
Anneke: A dalai láma előtti jelenésemnek az volt az előzménye, hogy néhány ismert személyiséggel dolgoztunk egy közös projekten itt Hollandiában. Így próbáltuk felhívni az emberek figyelmét arra, ami Tibetben történik. Egy dalt is rögzítettünk. Épp azidőtájt látogatott Hollandiába a dalai láma, hogy beszédet mondjon, és meghívott bennünket, hogy eljátsszuk ezt a dalt. Egyből listaelsők lettünk vele és rengeteg pénzt sikerült összegyűjtenünk Tibet és a tibetiek javára. Csodálatos volt. A király színe elé pedig úgy kerültem, hogy az uralkodó egy háborús veterán-napi ünnepségen vett részt. Nálunk a Veteránok Napja egy egész napos nemzeti rendezvény, óriási ceremóniával és egész napos programokkal, amelyet minden évben megtartanak, és amelyen a király tartja a nyitóbeszédet. Én is meghívást kaptam ebből az alkalomból, hogy énekeljek.
Ha a hagyományos koncertekről van szó, melyik fellépésedet tartod a pályád eddigi csúcspontjának?
Anneke: A Dynamo Open Airt. Ahogy ma is elmondtam fent a színpadon, amikor elkezdtük a koncertezést a The Gatheringgel, a fesztivál egy időre visszaszorult. Azelőtt viszont hatalmas fesztivál volt. Más, mint a mostani. A Gatheringgel az egyik legnagyobb bulijukon játszottunk, ami nagyon nagy dobásnak számított.

“Every city has a different feeling and a different energy” – interview with Anneke van Giersbergen
Vuur (Dutch for “fire” and “drive”, “passion”), the new metal band of the lady of thousand faces and musical styles, Anneke van Giersbergen, has made its homeland debut in front of a really large audience at this year’s Dynamo Metal Fest. We’ve had the chance to sit down with the ever-fascinating Anneke on this occasion after the show, in order to talk about the current news on Vuur and to recall her Dynamo Open Air related memories a little bit, among other things.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think your Dynamo Metal Fest 2017 show was supposed to be Vuur’s official debut. Prior to that, however, you played a club show in Leeuwarden and then performed at the Tuska Open Air in Finland and at the Masters Of Rock in the Czech Republic.
Anneke: Yeah, that’s true. We’ve had a club show in Leeuwarden where we did a lot of the new songs, almost all of them, trying them out. Then we’ve had a couple of festivals and now this is the last one for this little ride. We’ll bridge it over the summer and then, when the album comes out, we will really start touring.
You had played at the Dynamo Open Air with The Gathering twice back then.
Anneke: Yeah, ’96 and ’97, I think. It was very special.
So you’ve played some Gathering today, partly out of respect for the tradition, so to speak.
Anneke: Well, we always play Gathering songs. We play some Gathering or The Gentle Storm or Ayreon or Devin Townsend because we love those songs and people in the audience like them also. We always mix new songs with old songs.
What would you tell us about the musical direction of Vuur in general? Days Go By – London, the first songs you came up with, reminds me a heavier version of The Gathering…
Anneke: I’m not sure. We just wrote new music and it’s metal but it doesn’t have the folk elements that I did with Arjen Lucassen. So it’s more metal, it’s not prog metal. And I think also the link with The Gathering is that, of course, it’s metal and it’s my voice so there’s the distinctive sound.
Where did the idea of Vuur come from?
Anneke: We toured with The Gentle Storm and actually it went so well, I love the guys. We wanted to tour so we needed new guys and we put them together really quickly but they were so great. And then I thought if I wanted to make a metal album by myself I have to have these guys. So I asked them and they all joined me. And so far it’s great.
You also asked Marcela Bovio of The Gentle Storm to join you, right?
Anneke: We did but in the end she said maybe it’s better if she forms her own band where she could be the main singer so she left during the production. But she was here today.
Didn’t she even perform some guest vocals on the album?
Anneke: No, she really said she wanted to do something on her own.
It’s really cool that you get to work with drummer Ed Warby (Gorefest, Hail Of Bullets etc.) who originally came from the death metal scene.
Anneke: He’s one of the best drummers we’ve ever had and he’s a living legend worldwide so it’s fantastic to have him in the band. And we have some softer parts or some eclectic parts in the music and he’s absolutely cool with that. He’s very open to experiment with that.
Days Go By – London is the first song that Vuur came up with. Why London?
Anneke: There’s a name of a city in each song title. That’s the lyrical concept, all the songs on the album are about a city. The lyrics of this song called London are about the big fire that happened in 1666 so it’s an event I wrote about.
Does that mean each song is about an event from a city’s history?
Anneke: Yeah, events or feelings. I’m always touring and I come to those cities a lot. Every city has a different feeling and a different energy, it makes me think of different things. So I write about different things. Sometimes about events and sometimes just about how I feel about a city or its atmosphere and energy.
If you would write a song about my city, Budapest, what would the lyrics be like?
Anneke: Cities like Budapest are infinite in history. An old city with a long history. You’ve had some troubles but there’s also a lot of beauty and I would surely write about how beautiful it is and how welcoming the people are. There’s also a grim past. You can write so much about a city like that.
The In This Moment We Are Free – Cities album will come out in October and then you will embark on tour with Epica.
Anneke: It’s true, looking forward to that. It’s like twenty shows or so throughout Europe. We never toured with Epica before but we know each other for so long.
You definitely brought something new to the music scene when you first started with The Gathering. I imagine Simone Simons of Epica had learned a lot from you…
Anneke: Yeah, I think there are a lot of bands that started because they liked the music of The Gathering and I’m very proud of that.
And who were your influences back then?
Anneke: I listen to metal music but I also listen to a lot of other things. Black music, like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye… And I have my rock favorites, like Freddie Mercury. Those guys inspired me a lot.
For many years now you’ve been changing your look for every album. This time even your look is more metal.
Anneke: Yeah it’s true, I like to change. Girls like to change everything every year. I just buy and search for things that fit to the music.
Can we expect any other musical experiments from you besides Vuur?
Anneke: Not really. I do acoustic things on the side but my main focus in on Vuur. On the band, on the album and on touring.
Recently you performed for the Dalai Lama and for the king of Holland which, I imagine, the highest possible recognition for any artist. How did these events come about?
Anneke: I was in a project with well known people in Holland. We did a project together to raise awareness for the situation in Tibet and we recorded a song. Around that period, the Dalai Lama came to Holland to speak and they invited us to do this song. It went straight number one and we raised a lot of money for Tibet and for the people there. That was great. Then the king was attending a day that’s all about war veterans in Holland. It’s a national day called Veterans Day. There’s a big ceremony and a lot of things going on the whole day every year. And the king is also there to hold the opening speech. I was invited to sing at this event.
And from all your “traditional” performances, which one would you call the highlight of your career?
Anneke: The Dynamo Open Air. Like I said on the stage, when I started out with The Gathering, the festival disappeared for a while but it was a huge festival before. That was different. When they had one of the biggest editions, we played there with The Gathering and that was quite something.
