Kerestem, de nem találtam Veled készített magyar nyelvű interjút. Nem kerestek meg Magyarországról az elmúlt néhány évben?
De, pont ma. Véletlen egybeesés (nevet).
Február másodikán a British Punk Invasion keretein belül három legendás zenekarral (Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Exploited, Cockney Rejects) közösen léptek fel Budapesten. Melyikükkel van a legközvetlenebb kapcsolatotok? A Cockney Rejects-szel ritkán játszunk, talán évente, de a Test Tube Babies –ék oda valósiak mint mi, havonta játszunk együtt, velük baráti a kapcsolat.
40 éve csinálod a UK Subs-t, én 15 éve hallgatom. Bármelyik korszakból is választunk dalt, egyből meg lehet mondani, hogy ez UK Subs. Mit gondolsz erről? A banda tagjai rajtad kívül többször cserélődtek, miért maradt mégis a zenétek ilyen jellegzetes?
Örömmel hallom, hogy úgy gondolod, a zenénk jellegzetes. Ezt a jellegzetességet szerintem elsősorban a hangszerek hangzásának köszönhetjük. Fontos tényező, hogy Gibson gitárt használunk, bár pont most gondolkodom, hogy ki kellene próbálni a Fendert.
Te hogy érzed, mennyit változott a zenétek az évek alatt?
Nem érzek benne nagy változást, ugyanazt a klasszikus punk zenét játszuk amit a 70-es években, bár mindig hatással vannak ránk más zenék és zenekarok.
Mi az újdonság számodra mostanában a Punk berkein belül?
Szeretem az előzenekarokat. Ausztráliában mindig az első banda a nagy dobás, a többire már senki sem kíváncsi. Angliában pont az ellentéte, még mindig él a hagyomány, hogy bulik előtt kocsmákban alapoz a közönség, kevesen látják az előzenekarokat. Pedig érdemes meghallgatni őket, nagyon jó bandák vannak.
40 éve nyomod a punkot. Mi motivál a folytatásra, miért csinálod?
Nagyon sokat kaptam a punk-tól. Ez tette lehetővé, hogy beutazzam a világot. Rengeteg helyen jártam, csodás ételeket kóstoltam és sok barátom lett. Sokan a rajongók közül rendszeresen járnak a bulijainkra, és ezekből aztán barátságok is lesznek.
Milyen a hozzáállásod a közönséghez. Inkább nekik játszol vagy inkább magadnak? Kik jönnek el a koncertjeitekre?
Természetesen nagyon fontos a közösség. Nagyon vegyes a közeg, fiatal 14 éves gyerekektől az idősebb korosztályig mindenki. Motorosok, hosszú hajú rockerek, punkok, átlag emberek. Mindig ilyen volt, a kezdetektől fogva.
Mi a véleményed a punkról mint szubkultúráról, mozgalomról ma? Mi változott a 70-es évek óta?
Erre azt tudom csak válaszolni, hogy nincs jó válasz, minden nézőpont kérdése. Ismered a történetet amikor négy vak ember és egy elefánt van egy szobában? Az egyik megfogja az ormányát és felkiált “Ez egy nagyon vastag kígyó!” Mire a másik aki a farkát fogja meg, azt mondja, ez csak egy darab kötél. Amelyik a lábát fogja, aszerint fatörzs, amelyik az oldalát érinti meg, a szoba falának véli.
Nem tudom, te hogy vagy vele, nekem mindig van egy kedvenc dalom ami hetekig nem megy ki a fejemből...
Pont így vagyok vele én is! Nekem ez most az Antinowhere League Streets of London című száma. Én ráadásul még szeretem eljátszani is ezeket. Mostanában adok elő akusztikus show-kat is, ott eljátszok néhány kedvencet, meg régi UK Subs számokat és saját dalokat is. A következő akusztikus show márciusban lesz, de játszom a 2018-as Wacken fesztiválon is. Pár videó a youtube-on is elérhető.
Tudom, hogy szeretsz festeni, mi a kedvenc technikád?
A színeket szeretem és az intenzitást, pont mint a zenében.
Tudtad, hogy van egy Charlie Harper nevű amerikai festő? Ismered a képeit?
Nem ismerem, de felkeltetted a kíváncsiságom, megnézem a képeit. Elég gyakori név az enyém, de talán a Két Pasi Meg Egy Kicsi-ből ismerik.

I have taken an interview with Charlie Harper, the frontman of the UK Subs, since the band is coming soon to Hungary. Charlie founded the UK Subs at age 34 in 1977. For 40 years he is playing in this band and travelling around the world, giving around 200 concerts a year. Their albums has been named beginning with the letters of the alphabet and in 2016 Ziezo was published, which does not mean their career is coming to the end. The plan is to start again maybe with letter A. We have been chatting about past, present, changes and punk. Here it is.

I searched but have not found a Hungarian interview with you on the internet.
Have you given in the last few years interview to Hungarian media? Yes, actually today, coincidence (laughing).
On the 2nd February you are giving a concert within the framework of the British Punk Invasion together with 3 legendary bands (Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Exploited, Cockney Rejects). With which of them do you have the closest relation?
With the Cockney Rejects we only play together once a year, but with the Test Tube Babies we are playing a lot together and are good friends. They live near my home and we often play in the same places.
You have started the Subs 40 years ago, I have been listening to you for 15 years, but for me your music have a strong character and I can tell that its a subs song even if I have not heard before. What do you think about that? Except you the members of the band changed several times, how could yourmusic still preserve its character?
I am really happy to hear that. Yes, that actually partly comes from the sound and energy of the musical instruments we use. Now we use Gibson guitars that have a very characteristic sound, but now I am thinking about introducing a Fender.
How do you feel about change? Have you/ your art changed a lot through the years?
I dont feel huge change, as we continue to play that classic punk we have started with. However we are always influenced by other bands and songs.
What is new for you in Punk nowadays?
I like to listen to Warm up bands. In Australia, the first band is the big show, all others coming after are not so much interesting. In England there is still a living tradition to have some drinks before going to the club to listen to music. Many people therefore miss the warmup bands. There are a lot of very talented and good new bands. It really worth to hear them.
You have been playing punk with the UK Subs for 40 years now. What makes you carry on? What is your motivation?
Punk has been giving me a lot. Playing the punk made it possible for me to travel around the world, try all countries’ food, see a lot and meet with fans of the band. From these fans several became a very close friend and come to many parties to see us and meet.
What is your relation to the audiance?What is the audience like nowadays? Mostly youngsters or people of all ages? Do you rather play for them other for your own sake?
Of course playing for the audience is very important for me. Audiance is made up of a very wide variety of people, from 14 year old childs to those people who are listening to punk from the 70s. There are bikers, long haired people, punks and very ordinary people too. This has been the case from the very first time we played.
What is your opinion about the punk today? Is it the same as in the 70s?
It is all about your point of view. You know the joke with four blind people and an elephant in a room? One touches it’s trunk and says "This being is like a thick snake". For another one whose hand reached its ear, it seemed like a kind of fan. As for another person, whose hand was upon its leg, said, the elephant is a pillar like a tree-trunk. The blind man who placed his hand upon its side said, "elephant is a wall".
I usually have a top favourite song for a certain period of time that always tends to be with me, and that I listen again and again for example for two weeks. Do you also have such songs?
Yes, perfectly the same. For me now this is the Streets of London from the Antinowhere league. I also play these favourite songs acustic. I make personal acustic shows which contain my favourites from other bands, my favourite Subs songs and some own songs too. The next show will come up in March, but you can check that out on Youtube too. In 2018 Wacken fest in Germany I will also play acustic.
I have read about you that you like to paint. What is your favourite technique?
In painting as well as in music I like the intensity therefore I very much like painting colours.
There is an american painter also called Charlie Harper. Do you know his pictures?
No, but I will check it out. You know my name is very common. The most famous Charlie Harper is a fictional character in the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men .
